A piece of World's oldest Al Quran Found in UK
WWN - A fragment of the world's oldest Koran likely have found the University of Birmingham. Radiocarbon dating showed the manuscript at least 1,370 years old, making it one of the oldest texts in the world.

Experts manuscripts from the British Library, Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, said, "exciting discovery" would make Muslims "rejoice". The manuscript was stored along with a collection of books and other documents the Middle East, without being identified as a fragment of the oldest Koran.

When the researchers looked at the pages further, it was decided to perform radiocarbon dating test and produce a finding that very "shocking".

Director of special collections of the University of Birmingham, Susan Worrall, said the researchers "had no idea" that the Koran is the age old way. "Knowing we have a fragment of one of the world's oldest Koran is very encouraging, '' said Susan.

Trials to determine the age of a fragment of the Koran was done by radiocarbon acceleration unit at Oxford University. The trial results showed bits of it, which is written on sheepskin or goat and is one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the world.

"This could bring us closer to the discovery of Islam," said David Thomas, professor of Christian studies and Islamic University of Birmingham.

"The person who wrote it might even know the Prophet Muhammad. He may see and hear him preach. Perhaps he also knew the Prophet, and it was a tremendous possibilities," he said.

Hijazi script
The manuscript was written with the Hijazi script, which is an ancient Arabic script. Because the range of radiocarbon dating indicates the possibility of age, there are a number of public and private collections of manuscripts which are also expected to almost the same age.

So it is impossible to tell which is the earliest writing of the Koran. However, the discovery of the earliest age at Birmingham's manuscript, which probably came from around 645, making it the oldest manuscripts.

"Two of these sheets, which is written with characters Hijazi beautiful and clearly legible, almost certainly from the time of the first three caliphs," said Isa Waley, curator of ancient manuscripts at the British Library.

The first three caliphs was the leader of the Muslim community between the years 632 and 656. "When I first saw this sheet, I was very touched. My tears full of emotion and happiness," Waley added.

"I believe that Birmingham will be visited by residents from around the UK who want to see this sheet," said Muhammad Afzal, the board of Birmingham central mosque.

Professor Thomas said, this discovery will show citizens Birmingham that they have "a treasure whose value can not be compared".
